Driving through the deserts can be a fun and exciting experience for motorists but it also has the tendency to turn into a bad experience altogether if you are not prepared to handle the emergencies.   • It is always recommended to travel in groups or even better in convoys.
  • In extremely isolated or remote areas it is advisable to add an extra car to your convoy, fully stacked with emergency supplies and be ready as a back-up vehicle.
  • Be very careful of flooding. During rains, low and small water crossings can be completely washed out or unusable. Summer thunderstorms can also wipe out entire roadways.
  • Be aware of quicksand. When the water in the sand cannot escapes, it creates a muggy, liquefied soil that looses strength and cannot support weight. It is usually found in small, shallow patches and can pose a danger to motorists.
  • Watch out for soft, fine and loose sand. Move ahead on foot to inspect how large the soft section is. If you don’t have another car accompanying you or a tow chain, be very careful about attempting to cross that loose patch.
  • Mud at river or creek crossings can also land you in trouble. Some sorts of mud have a tendency to even stop a 4WD vehicle.
  • Cross a river or a creek with utmost caution. First inspect the firmness and depth of the river and creek crossing on foot. If water is too deep and muddy, then don’t try to cross it, you could easily be swept away.
